Has anyone tried both these sets? Is the 1292 as stable and sharp as the G90? I have a chance to possibly buy a pair of 1292 sets, but am unsure if they're actually inferior to G90s? From what I understand the 1292 doesn't have a slot for a moome card to be direct installed, and has a slightly narrower bandwidth, but what about focusability and convergence setup ? Would they offer a visible improvement compared to the Cine8 Onyx? I am guessing I might get some improvement in vertical resolving ability? What would be a realistic price nowdays for a 1292 that has under 1000 hours on it?
From pure logics standpoint there would not be G90 if it would not be superior to the 1292. To my understanding all newer Sony projector share the same extension slot that can be used for Moome card for example. The 1292 is built upon the Sony 1272 chassis, 1992 or so vintage, with some improvements. It uses a proprietary Sony 9" tube that employs a combined EM/ES focusing feature, that tube was said not very bright, on the other hand it could last longer than newer tubes those could driven harder. The 1292 was equipped most of the time with plain HD-10 lenses which are at least appreciated lenses of that family. The 1292 is recognized az the loudest CRT projector with more than 10 fans in it. The G90 came out in 1995, and is considered superior in many ways, to name a few: full electronic six pole astigmatism, built in gamma correction, HD-10F lenses (considered one of the best lenses), comes with razor sharp Panasonic LUG tubes. Both machines are overengineered therefore neither machine is recognized by its "clean" video performance.
Forum member gregstv owns a 1292 which he likes to play and he made quite advancements to its video circuitry. He also have a Barco 919 and had many other projectors he could be your best to ask.
Thanks gjaky, I think that convinced me not to bother Proprietary tubes just killed the deal, not to mention I've read there's a lot of streaking issues with this projector. Shame too cause they are low hour, great condition sets. :\
Well those tubes are not that hard to find (Sony 09MFX), they were used in some Barcos and AmPros as well. I think gregstv did not encounter any streaking with his set... If they are really cheap they could be fun to play with, but I would not invest too much in them.
They are very loud. But great fun to play with. Lot of fan mods on AVS that could be looked into. They produce a really nice picture. I have HQF900 lens sitting on mine and it's quite sharp. It's not as sharp as the 919 but is sharper than the 808s. Easy to setup. If I didn't have the 919 I would be happy to use the 1292 with fan mods of course. You should get it cheap. I paid $100au for mine. I only purchased it for the C-Elements. It was still cheaper than buying C-Elements from somewhere else and paying shipping and I have ended up with a fun project projector as well. If it's cheap grab it and have a play. If it has the HD10F lens it will produce a very nice picture.
Thanks for the info, but it's nowhere near that cheap. Asking price is 1500EUR for the pair, 4xx hours on both sets. Could probably haggle some, but based on what I gather, even 1000 EUR would be much. Oh well. I'll just have to keep an eye out and keep on chugging with the 8" Barcos
I understand if banding is not an issue on these specific sets, they would definitely be a step up (except for brightness which I understand is pretty weak on these tubes), but I also gather they're nowhere near Barco 909 or G90 as far as their worth goes. I'll just keep my eyes out for G90 sets.
I don't find the brightness that bad. I have made some changes to the video circuit which I think has helped. I think the banding is around the black clamp circuit on the VNB. Once it warms up a bit I will be able to get back to playing with the 1292. At the moment it's in the 0deg range in the shed at night.
