MT you may remember that I had these last year. Both of them have identical issues where, when the Room EQ or Tone controls are ON , all sound cuts out completely. Turning them off makes the sound come back like normal.
Basically - No tone functions, No EQ functions, Anything that has to do with the DSP makes the sound cut out.
So I am wondering, can this be repaired on these models? Does anyone have spare DSP boards? I would like to fix both of these so they can stop collecting dust in the corner. From what I read online the DSP seems to be the cause, that along with the Onkyo No sound thread on this site seems to be an identical issue, only different brand receiver.
How should I proceed? |

Any luck yet MT? For the record, I don't think its just bad solder joints, pressing down on the DSP chips (or any chip for that matter) didn't affect sound or functions, so I'm betting the DSP is completely dead, or I'm way off base on what the issue is.

Ok, I looked over some of the schematics. This may just be a simple problem or could end up being a complex one. Are you willing to put in the effort on this? This would take a lot of effort on my part also and i don't want to get partially through and then you want to stop. So think about it and let me know. I don't mind helping with this but you would need to stick with it.

I tell you what, I have it on the bench, so its ready for some work, I just received another pallet of projectors today so I should probably put this off until this weekend if that's ok with you. It'll give you some time to work on your stuff as well as me having time to get these sorted out. And no biggie on the delay, I don't expect HT receivers to ever be easy fixes, just happy when they are.  |

Okay MT, I'm ready for this, BUT with one small change in the plan. I found a working one of these on ebay with a busted positive speaker connector and the 2 front potentiometers not working properly (though they do work when you push on them, they need to be replaced). Otherwise this one works, both analog, and digital. What I was thinking at the very least, is that it was a good deal so I couldn't let it pass. I was also planning on using it to discover what board the problem part is on, and then we can go from there on that board (such as we did on the DRA 397). It should save us some time on it I think, plus this one came with a face that didn't have a huge dent on the side of it.  |

Have you tried swapping boards yet.
Did you try a master reset?

Yep, I did try a master reset on both the 3808ci and 2808ci, it didn't change anything on them. As for board swapping, I haven't messed with it today, I was just running it for a few hours using the internet radio on it while wrapping up some projectors I was working on. I'll start working on them in the morning when I'm wide eyed. For the record the model I just got is another AVR 3808CI, I couldn't find any 2808CIs that were busted. I'll probably start with the most obvious board, the HDMI/lan board since I am assuming this is also the digital board? It's pretty packed in there so there may be another board I'm not seeing. This will be a good change of pace from staring at light cannons all day. (and I just bought 60 more, they are too fun to resist ) |

You may want to try a firmware update on the non working 3808. You may have to initialize it before it will take the update. Let me know if you want the info..
If the update does not help I also have a service bulletin to try.

If the update does not help I also have a service bulletin to try. Found that info online about a year ago, did that and it just sits there doing nothing saying its updating. I let it sit all day at one point, no change.
Whats the service bulletin?

Did you initialize it first using the up and down arrows? You really should do an update as there has been a lot of them. And if an update was previously done unsuccessfully it can cause problems.

Oh I believe that completely. It wouldn't surprise me if an unsuccessful update is the cause, but I can't even get it to install the update. It will download but then just stop. I tried initializing it and that didn't have any affect on the update process.
