Good on ya for trying Eric. I myself considered doing the cap thing, than thought better of it and gave the projector to some other hobbyist to play with.
To be honest, I then considered the sunk-cost fallacy of messing around with second hand projectors and went and bought a brand new Epson Home Cinema 740HD and I could not be happier.
Worth every penny.
Good luck!

Thanks. I was aware of thread.
A little update:
- black outs continue to happen, but can be fixed by tapping the tap of the case or jingeling the connector panel - screen shrinked horizontaly, tapped the top of the case sharply with the nail of my finger fixed it 3 times - screen blanked out, pushing, tapping the connector panel briefly fixes it. - this is after 30 min of operation.
besides the power supply and caps, could this also mean broken solder connections on the board, that interrupt signal when the unit heats up?
I'm going to open it up and have a look.
Cheers,
thijs

Hi,
it is working again!
to answer your questions:
1. yes, it tried all connections 2. this is what made it work. 3. menu and input selector were all fully operation, but no video 4. no
so, what happened yesterday was, - i switched it on, s-video connected to satellite box - no picture, even when i went through the inputs - the video was unmuted at this point - i hit mute, confirmation on screen that video is mute - i hit mute again, confirmation on screen that mute if off. - voile, picture.
So, no clue, other then, i disconnected a bunch of stuff and connected it again and pressed some buttons.
Note that I am still worried that last weekend the picture showed a vertical black bar on the right side, there were some thin horizontal lines for a sec, and then the video cut out. my wife thinks that was because of a loose cable, I am not so sure.
anyway, we watched the full Warcraft movie (surprisingly entertaining actually ;-)) and no problem.
Any more thoughts? A loose connection and user error?
or a slowly failing power supply/caps etc.
Cheers,
Thijs

Yes, the s video (which i had not tested) did work. once.
I hooked up an old sattelite box that i dont use, it gave a picture on svideo, i then replugged the component to check, no picture
i then plugged s-video back, and now that one also does not show any picture anymore.
Why did you ask about the s-video? is this a known problem?
Cheers

Hi all,
I own a sony vw12-ht which has worked pretty much flawlessly until yesterday.
Now the video signal from any and all inputs does not show. The build in menu continues to work and show on the screen (lamp is ok)
- A couple of day ago I saw a foreshadowing: the component signal of my Playstation3 cut out for 3 seconds, the screen went black and the input selection notification showed itself briefly.
- Normal operation for 2 days
- yesterday I noticed the screen "shrinking" horizontally for about 5% from the right border of the screen (not on the left)
- restarting the projector fixed this.
- then the signal cut out again for 3 seconds. and came back.
- then my wife said she noticed before one of the component plugs was not properly connected.
- re-seating these plugs brought the picture back.
-( i did notice a slight spark jump from the plug to the connector. I foolishly had not switch off projector nor PS3)
- picture showed for a moment, then cut out, never to return.
tried all inputs. no joy.
Any suggestions how serieus this is would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Thijs

Thanks jeremy,
no matter. the picture quality is excellent anyway, I'm not going to risk it.
I will open it up and check it out just how it looks, on the off chance it is fixable. You know what they say: "If it ain't broke... it got 'nuf features yet" ;-))
I read about cleaning the glass work, wich i intend to do as there is a small spot on the lens.
Wish me luck. (i'll post handy tips here for any other lucky owner of near-obsolete-but-cool-expensive-hardware)

How about cleaning the lenses and mirrors on the inside? (without touching the lcd panels).
think that would be worth it?
cheers,

thanks guys! I very much appreciate your replies, and I apologies for getting back so late. ok, so, i took some pictures of the misaligned as best i could, and I agree, it does look like the 1 to 2 pixel misalignment you speak of. I seems so odd that a projector of this kind could have such a thing right out of the factory. What would be the level of degrading in image quality/brightness/focus caused be this? or is it minor? in other words, would it ever be worth the effort to try the ""manual free hand" option of just loosening the panel with the projector turned on, and visualy guide the re-aliment." ?? that i linked to in my first post? The image is pretty good, I suspect that more can be gained by careful calibration and a better source. I currenlty have a cheap dvd player hooked up via RGB, I was thinking of hooking up a Playstation3 via RGB so to play 720P content. The output signal of a PS3 is supposed to be pretty good, no? Any suggestions? Many thanks! Thijs Read more: repairalmostanything.com/thread/95/vw10ht-vw11ht-vw12ht-garbled-video#ixzz3OgmHE4K5
