Could the flash bulb have gone out? I was told that the previous owner plugged it in, there was a pop and a smell of smoke. I guess you could see why I attributed it to the burn marks on the 602A.

Well, I don't think it's the flash bulb. The current would flowthrough pin 2-3 is the 602A that should make it easy to distingush how to mount, so eiter pin2 or 3 probably goes to the bulb for example.

I tried checking the resistance on the flash bulb (while still in circuit), but didn't get a reading. I'll get around to disconnecting it - might as well rule it out.
While we're at it - you mentioned building a little circuit to test the 602A. What did you have in mind?

**BUMP** Anyone have any clues regarding this flash unit?
Thanks!

I have an idea I'm just short of time now, I'll tell exact part numbers...

So you have to build the circuit seen in this post. The capacitor should be rated at least 120VAC. there is nothing special about the resistor standard 0.125W is fine. As for semiconductor you should buy a Q4008 for example, and you are ready for testing.

Frankly, I'm not sure how to go about building that circuit as I am not a technician nor am I very skilled in reading circuit diagrams. I appreciate the time you've put into this but I could use something a little more simplified. Otherwise, it might be easier to bypass the flash circuit altogether and reserve it as a modeling lamp. Is there a way you can assist with this?
