Yes I meant c253 and I do it the same way least likely to damage the board , you can use one of 220UF to but that will be a thicker one.

Yeah i tested it all after the swaps, didnt really change anything. I reckon my SMPS is on its way out though, but im 2/3rds through rebuilding the spare. Some of the capacitors on it were fine, but some are a fair way out of spec ESR wise, the new ones are way lower than even the good used ones.

Maybe a bit of non-corrosive silicon to help support them (RTV3140) seeing they are on the underside. Looks good to me. I reckon i might do the other surface mounts the same way with FRs, some of them can go on the under side as well. the surface mounts mostly tested fine in the circuit, but when removed they were way out.

You could use "Liquid Electrical Tape" comes in a tube and is made for just this purpose. I know the stuff yes

I change them even if they test ok. The new ones should have better specs. I think of it as a prevention measures. These caps are old and could be failing under load. Its a big job to recap a projector, but I believe its worth it.

Yeah mate, and as i said in an email, i just found two leakers on the SMPS sub board too, which could be why that SMPS has as issue that results in a fan fail message followed by shut down.

I checked a few caps in the power supply today and found C600 on the small board the leaking.

Yeah mate we shouldnt have this issue with Panasonic FM/FR etc... Mine had a black Nichicon VZ in C600, that looks like a United Chemicon?
The SMPS that ive redone today has one more cap to be replaced and its ready for a test, this one had issues with voltage stability too, the 17v would vary greatly between a full black screen and full white, where as the one in the set now didnt suffer near as much variance, the obvious downside to that variation is that it has an effect on convergence, so it dark scenes it would line up nice, then bright scenes it would move slightly... You all know how perfect i expect my convergence to be!!!

The leakers on mine were Vishay.
