Hey, This thread describes my problem a little bit differently, Bluetooth and NET went greyed as you said, so Internet ppl asked me to do and update, Update got stuck at 70% MPU and error code 9-50, after that It shows "Recovery :Net/USB". I think its like windows now, I do have a nand programmer I know, But I need the firmware, where might I get that?

Starting last night, I'm having issues with my TX-NR646. My problems started after I tried to update to the latest firmware. That update appeared to succeed but then I had no audio. I then retried the firmware update, I got the 1-83 error at ~70%. I think I'm going to try to pull off the DSP2 NOR and reflash with the image from tjmotter and put it back on unless you guys can think of a better idea. Edit: My version numbers are: M1.11/18921AEA N1.06/19220AEA Dp,KR,??.8ÁÃ<{ V1.06/17713AE 01.01/16822AE I am able to get to network settings and (attempt to) update via NET but don't get any audio. So I think that means my DSP1 NAND is okay? Or maybe the fact that I was doing a firmware update at the time was just coincidental and I just need to heat/reflow the DSP?

It is hard to say, for sure. Usually ?? marks mean, that it needs re-soldering, or replacing. If you have a hot air station, you could reheat it and see what happens. If does not change, do what trioki said.

Hi I would also need the DSP2 image for 1009 (709 or 809 should be the same I guess). The provided file of 646 on electrotanye is for 64Mbit NOR, 1009 has 16Mbit NOR. This wonˋt fit. Can anybody help? Regards! Airfranz

Hi,
I am looking also at an ONKYO 646 with some issues The display shows some strange signs The device gets powered, but no menu. So I suspect firmware trouble. Any ideas?
Thanks for comments

I made the stupid mistake to update my tx-nr646 since I never done it. It failed at writing DSP at 70% as well with error 1-83. If not replacing chips and reprogramming NAND stuff as explained in this thread is there any way to get the receiver working again? I'm not really comfortable with soldering. If I do a factory reset output on connected tv during initial setup looks like attached image. Guess it could have to do with not being able to finish the factory reset due to the same reason the firmware upgrade fail but I'm just guessing.
I've tried to upgrade both with USB as well as Wifi/LAN with same result.

I've tried to upgrade both with USB as well as Wifi/LAN with same result. Your best option at this point is to try to install an older version of the firmware.
I would try this one first:
If it gives you an error, try this one:
The background on this is that Onkyo software teams are pretty new to the idea of user upgradeable firmware and they have screwed up too many times for me to mention. The biggest issue is that they tend to roll in major changes based on the perception that the user must have the current firmware already installed. For example, they might roll out version 1.10 assuming that the user currently has 1.09 installed but the whole thing breaks down if the user has something older like 1.07 which is missing some of the code in 1.09. In these cases, the upgrade will often fail. The best option I have found to fix this is to load an older version first and once I have the receiver working again, I use the following repository to download each version and install them in order.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but it is worth a shot.

That's a good explanation. The skeptic in me says the way in which they do it has acceptable negative consequences for some end-users and by happy coincidence some may decide to re-purchase the same brand after many years of good service.

Thank you! I'll try that right away. I didn't get notifications to my email so I didn't see your response until now. Really appreciate it. I'll report back how it goes.

tjmotter Sad thing is that both 102 and 107 fail while doing DSP Write at 90% and not 70% as newer versions do but it still doesn't work. 108 fail at 74% so my wild guess is that they write the specific part of the chip at different time during DPS Write process. I get the same 1-83 error whatever version I'm trying. Gah, this is a really frustrating way to break a fully working receiver. I figure it's a good chance the DSP chip or where the firmware is written is corrupt. I'll continue to try all available firmware versions and try at least.

Alright, I've cycled through all available versions and the fail during DSP Write at different stage: 102, 107 90% 108, 110 74% 111, 112, 114, 115 70% So I figure there's something wrong with the chip itself. Is this something you're able to solve having very basic soldering knowledge if you get the correct DSP chip? Ping tjmotter

Sorry for not responding in ages. Forgot about this but got angry about the bricked receiver today again If I understand you correctly tjmotter, do I need stuff for $33.99 + $18 +$18 Flashcat kit + SOIC-8 Standard JEDEC + EIAJ 8-lead packages Or did I misunderstand you? I'm not in US so the shipping alone unfortunately adds a substantial amount to the cost making it hard to justify.

You only need one test clip so your total would be $33.99+$18.00=$51.99 SOIC-8 Standard JEDEC and EIAJ 8-lead packages)
