Glad I found this forum , I'm no genius only having learnt to solder recently but my mate is pretty good at this stuff. My 709 has just developed the resistance to accept hdmi inputs, not from my oppo, fetch tv box , computer or minidsp. Obviously I'm pissed off . Should I identify which dts chip it is and find a replacement or try the reflow and cap replacements ? The mention of the repair forum ? Any link to that , just after some advice ?

They honoured it in America but I'm in Australia they farm it out and once the warranty expires game over.

If you have sound from any source (Tuner, Analog or Optical/Coax) your DTS (actually called the DSP chip) is fine. HDMI problems stem from a completely different source. On older systems (SR605/SR606 generations) the capacitors were often at fault. On the NR709, this is MUCH less likely (though not impossible). First, a couple of questions:
1) with all HDMI sources removed (Oppo, Fetch etc) and only the TV connected to the "MAIN" output, do you have video? - examples: do you see the Onkyo logo on the TV when you turn the Receiver on? - Do the on screen menu's work? 2) with a source connected (like the Oppo) and the TV connected, try to play the device and then press and hold down the "DISPLAY" button. - what does the display show? A working system would show something like: 1080p/60-->1080p/60 which would indicate that the Receiver chip has properly sync'd with the Transmitter chip. Since yours doesn't work, I would expect something like: UNKNOWN-->1080p/60 or 1080p/60-->1080P/60#
3) what do the firmware levels read? - to access the firmware levels, hold the "DISPLAY" button down and press the "ON/STANDBY" button - the "MAIN" Firmware level will be displayed
- within 3 seconds, press the "TONE +" button repeatedly to scroll through the firmware levels for all of the other subsystems if the front panel reverts back to a normal screen it means that you didn't press the tone + button fast enough so you will have to retry this process until you have identified all of the firmware levels.
The firmware screens should look like this:
The output you see from these tests will help us to understand what the problem is.

Hi okay I will give it a go , I downloaded the last firmware update I could see last night and I have to purchase a usb stick to update via usb. I am using it via coax and optical outs at the moment yes we video out the logo appears

All the menu trees function I will get my mate to snap some pics of all those questions you raised re : hdmi status and firmware. I have ordered the capacitors well the 100 uf 16v Nichicons I noticed there are a few more higher voltages one's on a photo I've seen but don't know their values ? Hi okay I will give it a go , I downloaded the last firmware update I could see last night and I have to purchase a usb stick to update via usb. I am using it via coax and optical outs at the moment yes we video out the logo appears If the logo appears it is a strong indicator that the HDMI Transmitter chip, the Video Processor and the QDEO chips are all working properly. Since you have sound, the DSP subsystem is working as well. This would tend to point to the HDMI Receiver circuit as the source of the issue. At this point I would not start changing out capacitors randomly. If you place one in backwards it WILL BLOW UP.
I would first start by checking to make sure the Receiver chip has the correct voltages. This chip receives 3 different voltages: 1.2V, 3.3V and 5.0V. First I would look for Q8951. Near it are two coils L8954 and L8953. I would check the voltage at these coils to make sure I have 3.3V. Next I would look for Q8191 and would check pin 5 to see if I have 1.2V. This one might be hard to get to with the board installed so I would look to see if coil L8133 was accessible and take my measurement there. finally, I would check the 5V supply at Q8961 by looking for L8964 and L8963.
Also, if I didn't understand electronics and didn't have experience with a soldering iron, I would take my system into a shop and let them do this.

Also, if you are going to change capacitors, the two you should change are:
C8921 - this is the 100uF/16V capacitor used to store the charge for the 5V line C8918 - this is the 100uF/16V capacitor used to store the charge for the 3.3V line
Both of these will be in the same general area on the top of the board. The only way you are going to know if they are bad will be that when you remove them, if you see a brownish dust underneath them, they are bad. If not, they were not the problem.
If you are intent on doing this MAKE SURE THAT YOU INSTALL THEM IN THE CORRECT ORIENTATION. There is a negative side (marked with a black line on the capacitor) and a positive side. If you install either of them backwards, it WILL BLOW UP.

The guy I share with has a great understanding and he is teaching me , I'm into speaker repairs he is into electronics . We also downloaded the manual

Okay the logo shows on the TV on Start up, input from the oppo shows unknown 480/60 Hz , toggled again it shows input 0/ output 3. I will do the firmware thing shortly. Note it is starting to get a little noise too.

This is all I could get from it 're holding the display at start up I wasn't sure what you meant about pushing the tone + button , but I pushed it and it didn't scroll through
