Another quick update for those who are looking to repair an Onkyo receiver. The Onkyo x09 series (example: TX-NR609) and the x1x (example: TX-NR616) both use the TI DSP that goes bad. The part number for this device is:
I purchased a newer style HDMI board off eBay that wasn't working. It had the D830K013BZKB4. The "official" replacement that does not suffer from failures is D830K013DZKB4. This part is used in the Onkyo x2x series (example: TX-NR626). As noted above, ALL of these TI BGA's can also suffer from cracked solder balls that cease making contact with the board. This can be fixed as noted in the original post by simply adding some Flux and reheating the chip. Knowing this, I found a bunch of HDMI boards on eBay with the "good" chip and bought them so that I could use the DSP chips. On a hunch, I also bought some of the newer boards for the TX-NR636 that use a higher frequency chip (D830K013DZKB5) and was happy to find that they work properly as a replacement as well. If anyone wants to go this route, you will need to invest about $30 for a "re-ball" kit that includes 0.60mm solder balls, a tool to hold the chip and a pre-cut mask to help align the solder balls with the chip. If anyone wants more info, send me a PM.

I don't have an answer for you, but I'm interested to find out, what is going on, with the newer receivers that loose sound, or video as well.

i have a onkyo tx-nr646 i was listening to songs suddenly there was no sound and there is also no test tone video is ok but no audio tried to update firmaware but dsp write stuck at 70% with error 1.83 kindly help I have seen this several times. Onkyo uses a NAND chip as the boot device for the DSP. This NAND chip first boots with a bootloader called YAFFS (Yet Another Flash File System) that initializes the Linux environment (sets Ethernet MAC address, provides a pointer to the location of the Linux image and then sets up a RAM disk that it copies the Linux kernel into). A LOT can go wrong during a firmware update with a NAND chip. Since all NAND chips have bad blocks, another thing YAFFS has to do is to manage those bad blocks. When a firmware update goes wrong it can often be attributed to a new bad block emerging that YAFFS hasn't picked up on yet. This is particularly troublesome if that bad block is located in the area that YAFFS is stored. This problem can sometimes be fixed by using a PC to connect to the diagnostics serial port on the Onkyo board. You can then use Putty (or some other Terminal session tool) to open a linux shell to audit the boot process. In many cases, the system will fail on the YAFFS boot and you can rebuild the missing pieces manually. In other cases, the NAND chip is too corrupted to fix with this process so you have to remove the NAND, burn another using a burner like the Flashcat Pro and then reinstall it.

I don't think your problem is the DTS chip. I suspect it is the firmware chip. It is located on the bottom side of the board, near the connectors on the side of the board and will be marked as Q3002. This chip will need to be programmed.

On mine I have No Input on the screen(no video and no audio), I have tested for short as you suggested and there is no short. What else could be? Can't be firmware issue as well?

This chip will need to be programmed. can you post some tutorial to program that chip Unfortunately no. The process is complicated and requires special equipment. There are a number of variables involved due to the fact that every NAND chip has bad blocks in different locations. You should first try to update the firmware again using a USB memory stick and following the process that Onkyo documents for the firmware update.

Are you speaking of the HDMI or do you have no audio or video from any source (including the composite and component inputs)?

It is the same 646. Only HDMI inputs do not work. If I use my smart TV(Youtube), the video and audio works. Passthrough does not work either. Everything else works, BT, Wi-Fi, radio, did a firmware update as well. You told me on the avsforum, to do those measurements, at the SII IC and there is 300 Ohm, at all those pins. It seems like something after the two HDMI ICs is bad. The receiver does not recognize that something is plugged in, in any of the HDMI inputs. Both HDMI outputs work.

I had sent a PM on the other forum explaining that 300ohms is low. I have 2 brand new chips and they test over 600 ohms. If you place your meter back on that 1.3volt line and apply a small amount of heat you will likely see that the resistance will drop to zero very quickly.
On the NR646 "HDMI IN" 1-3 and "HDMI OUT" Main and Sub connect directly to the MN864788 (Q8000). All the rest of the HDMI ports connect to the SII part (Q8302). With no HDMI inputs connected does the on screen display work?
When you connect an HDMI input and a TV and hold the "Display" key down, what is displayed?
Do any of the firmware levels list all question marks?

I guess, here it is better to "talk" about repairs, than on the other forum. I'm checking in here daily, but on the other forum, maybe once a week. So 300, is considered short? Hmmm, did not know that. If the SII is shorted, it can bring down the MN Hdmi 1-3 inputs as well? "With no HDMI inputs connected does the on screen display work?", forgot to check, but I believe that it works. I have tested with an HDMI input and TV connected. These are the results: 11: 0000080220B, 12:00000800000, 21:00000200002, 22:00000000200, 3:00000000000, 4:000000153000, 5:00000000000, 6:Err 3-4-0000

I would like to see what the actual voltage is on that 1.3v line. What are we looking at in these numbers you posted? What are you testing?

Holding the Display button, for three seconds. HDMI diagnostic mode. I'm wondering myself, what these number mean as well. TJ, if you answer, please let's switch to my other thread, Onkyo tx-nr646 no input.
