Hi all, i have looked into this before, but have not been able to find the correct service manual for the 1001/1044 projector.
It should be possible to mod the 1001 to take an RGB signal using composite video for sync, as can be done on quite a few direct view CRT sets, usually by feeding the RGB into the on-screen display lines at some point.
The VPH 1001 is a cut down version of the VPH 1044, and is missing the RGB inputs. The OSD and internal patterns are still RGB but finding a suitable point to tap in on the 1001 is the issue.
Once that is found, feeding in a composite video signal with the image blanking for OSD activated or even a composite sync signal should then allow the RGB image to be shown perfectly.
Although the 1001 is not much of a projector, it is bulletproof reliable, and displays a pretty bright 15.7kHz image that is perfect for retro gaming.
