I know of two NEC PG xtra installations where the owner put the machine relatively far from the ideal distance plus they use a fairy big screen (so they need light output) and they want high resolution. How wise to put spacers under the lenses to increase the lens throw making a better use of phosphor? Will I gain considerable phosphor, with reasonable spacings (< 1cm).

I don't think that will change throw distance. That would be similar to shiemflug adjustment which doesn't change throw. You can surely give it a try but I think if it was that easy then it would be much more popular.

My theory is that if the lens is shifted forward equally it sees the tubeface in smaller angle therefore the longer throw, though the focus shifts eventually that needs to be stay within the range of the lens. It was just a faint thought...
