Hi all,
I own a sony vw12-ht which has worked pretty much flawlessly until yesterday.
Now the video signal from any and all inputs does not show. The build in menu continues to work and show on the screen (lamp is ok)
- A couple of day ago I saw a foreshadowing: the component signal of my Playstation3 cut out for 3 seconds, the screen went black and the input selection notification showed itself briefly.
- Normal operation for 2 days
- yesterday I noticed the screen "shrinking" horizontally for about 5% from the right border of the screen (not on the left)
- restarting the projector fixed this.
- then the signal cut out again for 3 seconds. and came back.
- then my wife said she noticed before one of the component plugs was not properly connected.
- re-seating these plugs brought the picture back.
-( i did notice a slight spark jump from the plug to the connector. I foolishly had not switch off projector nor PS3)
- picture showed for a moment, then cut out, never to return.
tried all inputs. no joy.
Any suggestions how serieus this is would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Thijs

Have you also tried the S Video input?

Yes, the s video (which i had not tested) did work. once.
I hooked up an old sattelite box that i dont use, it gave a picture on svideo, i then replugged the component to check, no picture
i then plugged s-video back, and now that one also does not show any picture anymore.
Why did you ask about the s-video? is this a known problem?
Cheers

I asked because I am looking at the schematics and this is how you narrow down where a possible problem is.
1)Are you selecting the S video input again after it did not work? 2)Have you tried the video mute button? 3)Do button pushes/selections show up on the screen or only the menu when you select it? 4)Have you tried any type of reset?

Hi,
it is working again!
to answer your questions:
1. yes, it tried all connections 2. this is what made it work. 3. menu and input selector were all fully operation, but no video 4. no
so, what happened yesterday was, - i switched it on, s-video connected to satellite box - no picture, even when i went through the inputs - the video was unmuted at this point - i hit mute, confirmation on screen that video is mute - i hit mute again, confirmation on screen that mute if off. - voile, picture.
So, no clue, other then, i disconnected a bunch of stuff and connected it again and pressed some buttons.
Note that I am still worried that last weekend the picture showed a vertical black bar on the right side, there were some thin horizontal lines for a sec, and then the video cut out. my wife thinks that was because of a loose cable, I am not so sure.
anyway, we watched the full Warcraft movie (surprisingly entertaining actually ;-)) and no problem.
Any more thoughts? A loose connection and user error?
or a slowly failing power supply/caps etc.
Cheers,
Thijs

Hard to say. We could do all sorts of speculating.

I would recommend reading my VPL-VW10/11/12HT thread here in the digital projector forum. You likely need to recap your power supply as these Sony projectors are over 11 years old now, and the capacitors are beginning to lose their ability to charge/hold the charge. The power supply in your projector is identical to the one I repaired. See thread here: repairalmostanything.com/thread/95/vw10ht-vw11ht-vw12ht-garbled-videoYour projector may be working now, but I wouldn't bet on it staying that way without refurbishing the power supply. Best of luck, and enjoy the projector!

Thanks. I was aware of thread.
A little update:
- black outs continue to happen, but can be fixed by tapping the tap of the case or jingeling the connector panel - screen shrinked horizontaly, tapped the top of the case sharply with the nail of my finger fixed it 3 times - screen blanked out, pushing, tapping the connector panel briefly fixes it. - this is after 30 min of operation.
besides the power supply and caps, could this also mean broken solder connections on the board, that interrupt signal when the unit heats up?
I'm going to open it up and have a look.
Cheers,
