I only can think of the cable reversing pin2 and pin3 or if you use a usb to rs232 adapter ,that adapter not fully supporting rs232 protocol (there are alot of them out there) I use an old laptop (xp) with serial connection on it and a cable from an external telephone/fax module from the early days of internet. As far as I know with jumper w3 in place the settings don't matter it always should connect.

I used a PCI RS232 add-in card, and had no issues, but mine would not work without the jumper in place. using a USB-RS232 adaptor would not be a good idea. The chance for failure is far too high there.

I have had 3 front RS232 boards fail. One was after I flashed one board and then would not work. They all had shorted transistors on the front RS232 board. No idea why. Changed them and all good. That is unusual, lucky you had spares! Both mine work fine. Did you set the jumper before flashing? Just curious, because i had to or it would not start the process.

thanks for the replies.
the projector works now and before trying to connect to it via the rs232. so nothing damaged yet...
i have a desktop computer with bare bones windows xp installed (only use it for my cnc machine - so no bloatware installed. almost a fresh installation of windows in fact. its not even connected to the internet.) and an onboard rs232/parallel port board.
a transistor short! that does not sound good at all. what does a shorted transistor look like? singed?

Ill add to that, i used Windows 7 x64, which worked fine to flash, but nothing else worked. No jumper needed. Having second hand projectors makes it hard to know what would of caused the failures. After repairing they have been fine.

After repairing they have been fine. It just measures short. Took a while to find due to not expecting it to be a faulty rs232 card.
