Hey guys,
so I have this NEC HT1000 that has been with me for a while now. Until three or so years ago, it was on it's first bulb, above 800 hours, but it was getting very dim. Near the end it started acting up, forgetting to project the colour red occasionally, than one time it simply refused to start the bulb. It goes through the motions, but I don't get the 'whizz' sound of the lamp starting up, then it starts blinking the lamp led.
This projector series has been prone to having problems with the lamp circuit too though, so my question is, is there any way to actually test the bulb (short of sticking it into a different projector)? Getting a new bulb would still be cheaper than getting a second hand PJ that may or may not keep working.
PS: This is just a last-effort to save this thing from the trash because I don't want to buy another digital if I don't have to. (But I want to, just to have a reference for geometry setups of my CRTs, and while low-res, this projector had a decent enough lens system to give me a bright and big enough pic.)
Thanks for any tips!

Hey Ratty, due to the projectors age, it is most likely an electronic failure of the PSU, ballast, or possibly mainboard which controls the projectors other hardware. I wouldn't be able to tell you off hand what the exact issue with that projector is, as I've never worked on a HT1000 before myself. There is no way to test the bulb other than trying it in another machine, since there is no electrical connection until the mercury in the lamp is ignited. I did some checking on ebay, and there is a fully working used NEC HT1000 on there for $1 starting bid, and about $20-$25 shipping (assuming you're from the USA). I would go for that projector if at all possible, since you'd have a 2nd one to go off of if you wanted to attempt a repair on your current one, and at the very least, you'd have a working machine you are familiar with. the ebay link to the projector is: www.ebay.com/itm/NEC-ht1000-Projector-/162508596075?hash=item25d644636b:g:dgwAAOSw3gJZEKkrHope this helps!

Thanks, I'm thinking I might pick up an LT240 (uses same lamp, lens, casing, except has no dvi input, but has USB and a few differences) nearby that is working, but I'm not sure I really want to spend money on old digitals. It would just be great if I knew this was a bulb thing and could get it going to get a reference grid for setting up my CRTs. I'd get something newer for the task, but anything that has okay optics (I need to be able to set it up for a 3 meter wide screen) seems to go for more money than I'm willing to spend on it.

If you would like, I could offer to sell a NEC NP500/510 XGA LCD projector for $90 shipped, bulb life is around 50% used, genuine lamp, and I've reconditioned it so it performs/displays like it would out of the box. It has pretty good optics with a decent zoom distance (nice edge to edge/corner to corner focus), color, sharpness, etc... They're quite nice little presentation projectors really. It also has HDCP DVI. I could be sure if it would work for your application if I knew the throw distance of the projector, and also if that 3m screen size is width or diagonal? If you're interested let me know, I'd be happy to help you out!

Thanks, but I'll have to pass, shipping would kill the deal. I can buy PJs near the end of their bulb-life locally around 30-50 euro or so, I might just grab one of those when it comes to it. I really don't intend to use it for viewing anything other than grid-patterns and the sort to assist in setting up my CRT. I was actually considering buying a 720p NEC with a polarizer fault. The colours are crap but for a test-grid I wouldn't really care.
