So I have a rather nice set of tubes, but unfortunately the tube housings are in bad shape, glycol started to eat it away. Normally one would change the housing and get done with it, but I'm not feel like up to the task removing the tubes from the housing without damage. I started to clean the housing, where the pitting started I used a dremel drill to clean the surface from the grey stuff what was left there, then I applied some enamel paint to cover the aluminum that is exposed to the coolant. What is experimental about this is that I applied some paint even on the tubeface so only a 16:9 area is visible out of the tube, what I hope can further improve contrast.
Stridsvognen did something similar to a 8500 and he was pleased with the result (as much as one can be pleased with an AC machine) The first layer of paint didn't go flawlessly, likely I have to make a second run...

There is a big empty spot in my garage ceiling where a 1208/S2 used to hang. Nice hobby. And good to see that some people still have the love for the "sunshine in bottles" machines I have spend lots of hours tweaking and adjusting to get the best picture out of it. I got a bit of a frankenstein machine. It was 8 inch tubes, but with LC setup from a 9 inch machine. I do not remember that i had any leakage of glycol at all. Is that starting now since the machines are getting older? I got rid of it because I had to rebuild the room and didn't know where to go with it and someone offered me a reasonable price for it. Man I remember the weight of that thing...ooof If I would get my hand on a 909 for a good price I would consider hanging one again. Because the black was amazing and the colors were nice. And a real nice "going to the movies" feel. But I have to admit, to just watch a game or show with friends the new digital epson does the job well. Because we don't need that dark of a room anymore. br Maurice

I panted the glass like that on the old 9500 test machine, changed glycol in one of the tubes ,and the epoxy pealed right off the glass, so i think it would be better to cut a piece of pvc to frame the 16:9 on the tube face. Hard to say if it changes anything.
