The unit had a blown left output. I replaced several parts and the output was working, but there was still a sort of hissing sound when the volume is very low. I still haven’t figured out what it is. All components measure o.k. compared to the other channel.
But at one point I decided to perform a fw upgrade since there was a newer version anyway. (I read somewhere that a humming sound could be related to fw, but reading further afterwards, this wasn’t exactly my problem)
So the fw update itself went south. I wasn’t babysitting it at that moment, but when I came back and turned the unit back on it only gives “Please update / push enter”
I downloaded the fw and tried to do the upgrade via an usb stick. But It gives 1% and eventually code 1-83.
@todd. Have you encountered this before? I think it can be corrupted fw?
In the meanwhile I fixed a NR646 with blown output. And that unit is now working, at least it gave me a good feeling to have fixed something again and not try to fix something and make it even worse hehe.
Still waiting on the programmer to arrive, should be here before the weekend.
Lot's of reading an fumbling this weekend. But didn't get any further with this machine. Checked all voltages to be sure and went over the board visually but nothing.
Also regarding the messages INFO: loading kernel image into RAM... Unknown command 'bstate' - try 'help'
I can't find anything regarding "bstate" on the internet. Perhaps it has to do with the ram chip, maybe it is faulty.
So I took the nand of the board and read it with the 809h programmer. It did read fine. I created a copy image of it and decided to check it for bad blocks. (since checking for bad blocks means the chip is overwritten with data) So it has bad blocks. Not sure if this is the reason of the problem since yaffs would work around bad block's. did flash it again with the just newly created file and soldered it on again. But no change in behavior, it just doesn't want to go past "Starting kernel ....." I would assume messages with "uncompressing kernel" and so on.
I would like to flash the nand with another image, but so far no luck finding it. I was even looking into trying to load an image from another Onkyo type of receiver in the X5X range. But no luck, only older images, but these are all for the older DSP chips. Apparently Onkyo went to the am3354bzcz80 from the X5X series onwards.
Maybe it is DSP2 that is not wanting to work. (reading internet and asking on another forum) The cause can be Q3401 flash chip. (also a post about it here on this forum) Unfortunately i don't have an image for it so I used an image from a nr646. But no progress. Symptoms still the same.
Yes Tibimakai I agree, Tjmotter's knowledge is needed here It's impressive how he all gathered that knowledge and I'm interested if he knows more about this NRx5x series. It seems Onkyo switched to a complete other DSP processor. And these don't seem to be specially licensed for dolby. What I mean is that the older chips are licensed like Todd says. That's why they can't be officially bought from TI.
Anyway, I can't seem to find more info on the internet over these "newer" machines. No info on boot process and also no NAND dumps. I went ahead and loaded the bin file that I extracted from the nand into a hexeditor and started searching around. I could find something about this "bstate" It seems to be related to the update process. Maybe it is stuck in this update process.
For now I'm stuck with this machine. At least I was able to do the login on a NR818. So now I know how that should work. This one has a nand with a lot of bad blocks. The list is almost endless. It passes the bootup but it is unable to load processes and keeps trying to start those. new nand's for it are somewhere between my house and china. So I can work on it when they arrive. Same for the NR616. I'm hooked haha.
I'm trying to stay away from software issue receivers. Usually, I go for those that I assume, that have an amp issue. I'm waiting on some HDMI IC and that nand chip adapter(for the 717) to arrive from Ali. Also, some TTA004B transistors from Germany(Ebay). They suppose to be here by May 2, the latest.
Oh the TTA and TTC transistors. I got them from everywhere. ebay germany, ebay uk, aliexpress. I never was able to find a descent replacement transistor for it that was available and in stock here in the Netherlands. Also for the main output transistors....there is a shop here, but they charge 10 euro per transistor. I got 5 sets of NPN and PNP transistors on the way from China. I hope they are not fake. My own spare part stock is growing as we speak. I guess i'm committed now to proceed and repair these units to break even haha.
A little further now. and some breakthrough I went on the dark side of the web and found a nand dump from a Onkyo CS-N575D on a russian forum. I had to create an account, and within 30 minutes my account was deleted...pff. Anyway I managed to get some info and a link to some files. I dived into some files and loggings and could see that it had the same processor and nand as well. Since I was stuck anyway I went ahead and flashed the DSP NAND. And pronto, it came alive. It got passed the "Starting kernel" And looked like it was booting and starting up. Now there was also the option to cancel the startup and check the environment variables.
I went ahead and tried to start the fw update from usb and network, but both keep returning 0-83 and 1-83. So that was a bit of a bummer, i was hoping that it would be able to get starting with this image. Anyway, bulks of putty loggings now so I will dive into that and see if network and usb are even starting now.
Be aware, that some of these newer receivers, require to run the firmware twice. Initially shows an error and if you run it again, it finishes and shows Completed!. If I remember correctly, it used to show 0-83, or similar code. Actually I have found the TTA004 available in Netherland(don't remember the store though), but I did not want to wait that long. Digikey/Mouse re are out of stock. I have TTC004, but not TTA004 transistors. I have ordered some Germany(Ebay) and they are not able to ship them. US does not accept mail, or something like that is going on. Finals are available at Digikey.
I tried twice, but that didn't change anything. With the wrong fw loaded, it at least gives me access to the serial port. So i'm poking around a bit. At the moment it is not really trying to fix the unit, but more like trying to understand what is going on. It's tricky because the wrong fw could set me on a wrong trail. I would like to have a working unit to see what is going on, maybe another broken one comes along on the local online market place. The stupid thing is that it all started with a blown L output. But the sw update didn't do any good. Wish I haven't had started that.
Other units are still in the wait. still waiting for various nand chips to arrive from china. And not so much time on my hands currently. I'm painting my mothers house in the free time I have, my dad passed away recently, so now I have two houses to take care of haha.
p.s. Do you know other sources/forums where I could check as well for info? I just about googled everything haha. Basically it is begging for NAND and eeprom dumps. I understand that people are not really open to share them to all. Specially when they don't seem to bother to at least change the mac address and so on.
For me, (I still have a TX-RZ610, which takes the same 656 firmware) many times when I apply a firmware, it comes up with an error and when I apply it again, it goes through and shows completed. Sorry to hear about your father. My parents past away in 2010 and 2015. I should be working on my garage walls/ceiling(mud tape and paint), but I don't have patience and enough knowledge on how to do it. These days, I don't want people to come to my house. The plan is to build a mancave there(something simple, not a high end one), with two workbenches, tools for electronics with computers, microscope, power supplies, soldering stations, etc. Tool chest with tools to repair my cars and a Dolby Atmos movies theater 7.2.4 system, with Klipsch speakers. I have everything already, but these walls stop me, to finish this place. For this reason, I don't repair much these days.
Hey you just described my garage haha. It is my home working space for work/ electronics repair and man cave. It's not big so no cars will fit in anymore. They just have to stay outside. I have a desk with my p.c.'s and when turning around there is my electronics workbench with microscope and all other tools. mainly used for iphone repairs. But nowadays for onkyo's hehe. The other half of the garage has comfy seats and an epson tw5900 pj. There used to be a 130kg CRT beamer hanging there. But that hobby is over. Maybe if i could get a cheap barco 909 I would consider hanging one again. But mainly I watch formula 1 races with friends on there. Missing that now in this corona mess. I did miss a descent audio system, and looking for one got me into these onkyo's. The first one that i got didn't have L+R line output's on the back. I needed them because I wanted to connect my bose 901's as L+R, but they require a separate amplifier because the bose speakers come with their own equalizer that needs to be connected to a tape out monitor. (Still haven't found a modern receiver that still supports that) That's how i found my way into these onkyo service manuals. I was looking if I could tap into the L+R signal lines and make my own L+R monitor in and out connections. I ended up buying a broken NR818 and use the line out to connect to a separate amp to get them going. (As for the bose 901's.....I know it is a big no no to audiophiles. I don't even dare to talk about it haha) Anyway my ears are shot anyway. So I don't have the ear for details. They are damaged, i have a constant beep that doesn't go away. Probably from working with heavy loud machinery in my youth. And also the loud music in clubs and events didn't help.
Well, nice to hear what fellow forummers are doing
As for the 656. I encountered Some weird stuff yesterday late. So the serial port gives me a load of info that i'm still not able to follow to be honest. But at least it's alive. On the machine itself it only says "please update" and I couldn't do anything else. Till yesterday that is...I accidentally pressed the "tone"button on the front. To my suprise it showed me the bass setting and after that it gave my the normal display. So no more "please update" stuck screen.
That got me exited. Still not fully functional. I was missing the right onscreen menu's on the screen (via hdmi output i mean) Anyway I decided to go and update various fw one by one. (sw showed 2150-6??0-7100-0010) Not sure what that means, haven't looked it up. VMPU upgrade wnet fine, WRK failed OSD went fine. MPPU error 8-50 and NET went fine. However I noticed when I performed the NET upgrade, after that serial console output was the same as with my original NSN656 dump. It stopped at "loading kernel" But what I think now is that everything is still going, but the NET fw somehow stopped the output to the serial port. To test it, I downloaded the oldest available fw that i could fine for the NR656 and performed the NET update. After that the console was back again. However a bit different. I couldn't see the messages regarding uncompressing kernel and so on. But it came back with a login prompt. So I could access it again. Regarding DSP fw upgrade, it fails....a bit confusing to me. I would expect that it would be no problem since it is running.
But it was late and time was up. So, perhaps not really further with finding the problem, but at least some more info richer now hehe
next time I will check what fw version are actually in there. That's what I should have done first when I had access again. I wonder what is really wrong with this thing. would it be sw only...or perhaps still hardware
You must be gidding, right? I have a ringing right ear as well. Most likely, from loud music in the car. Two amp that I have repaired from Ebay, Installed a refurb Kenwood Nav unit, Focal and Infiniti speaker. Also a 10" shallow sub in the spare wheel. You are in the UK, since your Epson is a TW model. I have got an 5040UB refurb from Epson. I didn't have a chance to use it yet. From all these repairs I have purchased a bunch of Klipsch speakers. Living room, one bedroom and the garage, three Dolby Atmos theaters. Haha. Garage is not done, but I have the equipment ready. I have picked up an 16 channel Crestron amp, that will be the main amp, to run the garage theater. Got lucky on Ebay, when I have picked up an almost new Onkyo TX-RZ730, with one bad channel, packaged like new from the store. Can you imagine that? One transistor blown in the preamp section, and all for $120. 11 outputs, yeahh. Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 system. Two Klipsch Subs as well, all are the RP once, not the cheap R series. Panasonic 4k player, Roku Ultra, Xbox One S which I repaired, plus upgraded the hdd to 2Tb. 125" motorized screen, center speaker will be pointing down from the attic. Build a box for it, Klipsch RP-450C. I think that I have read somewhere, that all the firmware components should contain the same version components. Can't be some components from the latest firmware and some from an older version. I hope Todd will chime in, because he is the expert with these things. I'm mostly sticking with amp repairs. HDMI IC(s) are not getting to warm? Since you don't have output? Good luck with it.
lfcfan: Hi Todd, have been reading endlessly about the topic, and I really don't think that I'll be capable to 1. do the job myself as I don't have enough of the right equipment, and it looks like only the people who have access to TI exclusive distribution networ
