I have one of these in mint condition here, and hell when it DID want to come on, it works perfectly, and sounds really good for a freebie receiver. It has an odd issue however:
When you power it up, the receiver powers up, LEDs come on etc... but no buttons will operate at ALL. In fact, they wont operate until the "Pure Direct" button works, when that one lets you operate it (allows that function to work once presses) the rest of the receiver will work perfectly as it should. Until then it wont let you operate it. What could be the issue, where would I proceed?
I did for the hell of it contact Onkyo, and they were willing to repair it (at my cost of course since it is now out of warranty). It would have cost almost $200 by the time it was sent in, repaired, and sent back. I don't wish to spend that much on this receiver so if I can get some troubleshooting done that would be excellent.

DMM on DC voltage and use the analog gnd,(GNDA) for neg probe and test the other pins for correct voltages.

Okay MT, this is the one we're gonna work on next. I'll get to those voltage test you posted oh so long ago, once the receiver stops working again (just hooked it up again after all this time and its working right off the bat, so im trying to heat it up and make it stop working).

Okay it stopped working finally. I should specify that the Pure Direct button does nothing while the receiver is not working, and there is no audio output while its not working, but the rest of the buttons and menus seem to operate fine.
When the receiver is working, pure direct works of course, and sound comes out as it should.
The voltage readings you had me do are as follows:
Pin 3) +4.922vdc Pin 13) +5.002vdc Pin 18) +4.968vdc Pin 22) +4.970vdc Pin 39) +6.700vdc Pin 40) -7.001vdc
Used Pin 33 as GND.

MT, I just want to say I *think* its the DSP desoldering from the board, because the listening mode, pure audio functions do not operate, the rest do, and I noticed when it did start to operate (again) that the DSP on the display lit up, I can't get it to light up at the moment, which would probably explain why I can't get audio out...??

Sorry to post so much, but I also just noticed, if I press setup, go into #3 speakerConfiig, then Level Cal, it makes a relay click, then if I back out of the menu, the stereo/listening mode buttons function, but still no audio. If I power the receiver down, then back on, the buttons cease to operate again, until I do what I just mentioned.

No problem MT. We can go slow on this one until I get that Jamo sub fixed. That's one of my many personal pieces of equipment so it now takes priority.

MT, I wanted to add that I've been running this receiver for the past week. I was a bit under the weather after the weekend but I'm finally back to normal so I can work on this unit. Its been just sitting on for the past few days, audio is playing out of it, I haven't switched it from FM source. I noticed that there is a relay that seems to be randomly clicking away in the receiver. It happens I'd say at least once every hour or two. The audio doesn't cut out, it still plays, but I'm sure whatever is making the relay click randomly is probably the cause of what's going on in this unit. As mentioned before I seem to have to wait for a certain relay click, then switch to my audio source, and the audio will work from that source. Quite an odd issue to say the least...

I think the first thing to try is a reinitialize. Press and hold the video-1 button and then press standby until 'clear" is displayed.

Did the reinitializing, still behaving the same way. You know, for once I would like a factory reset to actually work, lol

Well with this type of problem it is difficult to give any specific guidance. It could be a firmware problem in which testing circuits would be useless. If it is a BGA device, well you know how that goes. I had you check those voltages but did not elaborate as to when to check then. Actually you should check them while it is working and also when it is not. These are the control lines and the idea was to see if there where any changes or losses when it is acting up. You could also try some freeze spray when it is acting up just to try to narrow it down to a specific component. Of course these tests probably would not reveal a firmware problem. Even a problem on a totally unrelated board could cause the processor to freeze up just like in a PC when it just stops doing anything. Hardware or software can cause it.

I agree with what you're saying completely MT. I'll probably poke around in it a bit this week and see what I can find. It's been sitting here so long it doesn't matter anyway, I just like the silver face on the newer equipment. Gotta love the problems these things develop

Hi,
sorry for bumping this old topic, but... i got exact the same issue with my tx-sr803. is the problem the DSP chip?
