Changing caps didn't work for me. I also exchanged the capacitor close to the heat-sink on the 'Power Block' (no schematic in manual - see attachment). The beamer failed with coloured lines after insertion of a Chinese lamp. Later on it didn't start at all with both lamp/cover and temp/fan leds lighting up constantly -> service manual says 'electrical failure'. I noticed all major supplies didn't reach their normal value so it had to be primary (before transformer) and found R2136 on G-board to be defect - the largest value in the series tree. Possibly the Chinese lamp asks a little more current and the supply raises primary voltage to compensate putting this (tiny smd) R under stress... Now what worries me a bit is that all 6V alu caps on the computer board (C) are not flat. I assume they were flat once but reacted to some over-voltage. The beamer seems to work correctly though having survived at least six or so starts/shut-downs. Hope this has helped someone ;-) Attachments:

Good on ya for trying Eric. I myself considered doing the cap thing, than thought better of it and gave the projector to some other hobbyist to play with.
To be honest, I then considered the sunk-cost fallacy of messing around with second hand projectors and went and bought a brand new Epson Home Cinema 740HD and I could not be happier.
Worth every penny.
Good luck!

He Thijs. Changing the R is quite simple as it doesn't have to be a smd type. I used a regular carbon R I had lying around and that is the main reason for my post. Buying caps costed me ~20€ and quite some time all-in-all without doing any good. This beamer (of a friend) was only used with events i.e. had little usage hours and the owner really wanted this oldie come back to life (having already bought a new lamp)... Attachments:
