Yes, it needs to have the firmware preinstalled.
I see the A710 uses the same board number and there is one on the list. But I don't know the condition of it but I could ask.

I wonder how they are preprogramed? I bet through the ports on the back of the Receiver I think that board is shot anyhow a few pulled pads etc. I wonder if there is a service some where for programing them. Nashou .

Thanks moderator My Yamaha Rx-v671 had konked off with only red light on the main zone. It never turned on but all the HDMI used to pass thru to the tv. I showed it to 3 technicians and they all said that the HDMI BOARD IS GONE. but if the board is bad it would not pass thru the signal to the tv but mine was passing that only the power wasn't coming on. Browsing thru i came across this post and doing the main zone tone control and info procedure i got it to turn on. Thank you for the valuable information. you saved me some money on the new receiver.

Unless the main relay is latching on then there will not be any power there. And you indicated you had nothing, no power, no lights, no clicks. You next need to go to the video 3 board. It is the one the harness from CB376 goes to. On that board look for connector CB375. Again there are no pin numbers on the schematic so look at the diagram on page 145, if your manual is the same as mine. Using the DGND for neg, test the other pins with DMM on DC voltage and give me all the readings you get, calling the +3.3 pin 1. Check that other connection there with the 5.5v just to be sure we still have it on this board.

If you can get at it to test it with it plugged in, DMM on DC voltage, pin 2 for gnd, pins 1 and 4 = +5.5v and pin 3 = +3.3v

Ok, lets try this first. Make sure all boards are in and connected. Press and hold the "tone control and info" buttons. While holding, press and release the "main zone" button while keep holding the other 2 buttons for another 5 seconds. Let me know if you get anything. Thanks mastertech, 10years later your post came up in a Google search and your instructions worked to reset my Yamaha RX-VX671. I was recently given it because it appeared to be dead & wouldn't turn on. I now have a working receiver which is more powerful than any of my stereo amps, but these things seem to be quite complicated to configure. To get it to work in stereo mode with a subwoofer I had to hook it up to a tv screen to get into the settings menu! I think I'll stick to simple stereo amps in future.
