I too have an Onkyo TX-NR818 but unfortunately I know nothing about circuit diagrams. I do however have a problem as follows:-
The amp turned it's self off. I tried to turn it back on and for a second or two the following showed on the display Volume 55db and turned its self off. All cables were removed including power cord. I waited an hour connected power cord only and message showed Volume 55db and disappeared after one or twe seconds. I've tried again several times with several days apart. It will not switch on. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Are you able to test with a DMM and solder components?

Hi and thank you for your response. I don't know what a DMM is but if it's a volt meter with ohm and other values then I can follow instructions, if put simply and yes I have a soldering iron and can solder wires together so I am prepared to try.

I had to think about this for a day or two. Usually when helping someone here they have a little understanding of testing boards and components. For someone who does not have even this knowledge it can be very difficult if not almost impossible to assist. read some of the threads here on repairing receivers and try doing the P/S tests in this thread and see how you make out.

Thanks for all the excellent information on this issue. My TX-NR818 is also dead. Plug it in and it does absolutely nothing when power or any buttons pressed. Note that I just got this free as a guy was getting rid of it and thought it may just need a new fuse. Fuses all look good (at least the 5 I could find without major disassembly - not sure if there are more hidden away). I did the above check that KG posted and have power coming into the relay (although it seemed to be jumping around on my mm). When I did the 2nd part to check continuity, I kept getting a beep (without even pushing the power button) and never had any audible click on the relay. It just beeped every second or two. Not sure if this still means the relay is bad, but I ordered one to give it a shot since they are inexpensive. I ordered a 9v and 12v relay. I saw MasterTech mention to get a 12v instead of the original 9v. There is no problem using the higher voltage relay, yes? You are actually better off with the 12v relay since that is what the rail voltage is.

I understand your point of view. I may try an approved service center but fear that repair charge may well be beyond my means.
Many thanks for your time, Roland. (Showasanke)

Just wanted to say a big THANKS to Mastertech.
My relays arrived today and I put in the new 12v relay. The receiver powers up now!!!
Looks like a nice receiver I got for free and then put in a $1 part plus $5 shipping.

hi , i want to thank everyone on this board , i have a tx nr818 that had the hdmi board fixed by onkyo last year 2016 for free on recall , then about a month ago i started having problems with it powering up then it would not power up at all DEAD so i called onkyo told them what problem i have with it they told me they have a buy back program which you have to buy a similar receiver so it would've costed me at least 800.00 dollars so i decided to research this problem and came across this site ,read 14 pages and decided that its probably the 9v relay . i ordered two 12v relays ( an extra one just incase ) and soldered it in place , fired right up , i am so excited now dont have to part with it ( as of yet anyway ) thank you guys so much !!!!

Mastertech, this is not the bad relay issue, which is fairly common issue, with these receivers?
