Actually, the firmware was pretty easy. On these models, all of the firmware is identical with 1 exception. The Main CPU has firmware embedded in it (I had to buy a special Renesas programmer for these) but even it is the same. The one difference is that Onkyo places an external EEPROM in the Main CPU circuit. This EEPROM isn't very big but it stores (what I call) the "personality" of the receiver. Things like front panel button configuration (for example, DSP configuration (1 or 2) and any other model specific configuration items. In order to make it work in a different model, you typically only need to copy this EEPROM, and of course, modify the circuits so that they match. In my case, the NR1010 has multiple D/A converters and they are wired to different lines than the NR818 part of the process was to identify the 0 ohm resistors they used to route the signals and move them to the proper location on the NR818. The NR1010 has some additional video features that required me to also remove some circuits in that section.
Back to the firmware, I recently fixed an NR515 board for a guy but I didn't have an NR515 to test it with. It is the same board as an NR616 in every respect except for that EEPROM on the Main CPU. I first tried it in my NR616 and it "kinda" worked but the front panel buttons are very different so it was difficult to navigate and I couldn't get any sound out of it. I simply removed the EEPROM (only 8 pins) and replaced it with an NR616 EEPROM and was able to test everything properly before converting back before shipping it out.

Hi, Just here to report that the chip from China arrived. But no luck. Same symptoms. DSP firmware still shows question marks. Not sure if the new chip from china is o.k. of course. To be honest it looked a bit "cheap" Going to test a bit later if serial connection is giving anything. I would assume that even if the eeprom is bad, some initial messages over serial should be arriving right?

When I tried what you have just did, I got to the same result and than I was questioning the quality of the IC, my soldering skills, or maybe a software issue. That is why, I don't want to deal with DSP issues.

Hi tibimakai, I'm confident about my soldering skills. And having a good quality hot air station and (micro) soldering station did really help me...I started out with cheap garbage equipment. I couldn't figure out why i wasn't getting the same results as people i followed on youtube. In hindsight... i was more or less baking the chips to death instead of soldering them on, because there wasn't getting enough heat from the hot air station. What is bugging me is the parts supply from china. It is a bit of miss and hit. Also with ipad/iphone parts. For the same reason as for the DSP chips (as I learned from Todd) you can't get specific apple chips. They are specially made for Apple and apple isn't selling parts for the repair business at all. So you are depending on China vendors that get parts through another door from the factory.... As for the software/firmware, I would like to get more into that and learn about it. For this evening I haven't managed to get that serial test. Had to fix an ipad for a friend. Tomorrow I will give it a try Also I will get my scope out and check if the Xtal is working. Because it is close to the DSP chip and maybe they fried it as well with that lamp job. br Maurice

Hi Todd, Nice info!
I'm having a problem with an NR717 receiver and I need the DSP1 NAND Flash file for it, I have several files for the Onkyo TX-NRxxx, but the NR717's got corrupted and I'm not getting any 717 device to copy the NAND Flash on time. Can you help me and send the file? If you can help me thank you.
kind regards, Rhone

Where is that located on the board. I have a 717, with bad DSP and missing main CPU.

If the issue is minor (I have seen this only once), the system will try to boot but typically it is the YAFFS system that gets corrupted which means that the initial boot code for the DSP simply isn't there.
sorry, Todd

Hi Todd, Thanks for the info again. I did try to connect the serial console and didn't get anything indeed. Also I measured the crystal with a scope, but it is doing 20 MHz nicely. This unit will be shelved for some time now. I will have to invest in eeprom tools thanks. br Maurice

Hi Maurice, I followed his attempt to repair the 616 and I think it is worth trying to replace the NAND flash, Todd is correct in his approaches. I have already made several repairs on this onkyos and I have already caught many corrupted NANDs. Initially I did the DSP change first but sometimes it didn't work at first, and along the way I realized that NADNs failed a lot. Today I start with them that welding is a lot easier and I already clear the doubts. I have an RT809H to program them, but Todd's tip is cheaper (flashcat). If you need the Flas NAND file for 616 I have it.

Hi Rhone, Thank you for the offer on the 616 files. I will gladly take it. Also if you have the ones for nr818, would like to have them as well. Today I picked up another nr818 from the local online marketplace. I can't help myself, i need to stop buying them hehe. Also a nr656, that has a blown right channel. More or less an easy fix. ordered parts for it (blown power transistors and blown transistors on the pre-amplifier board) For the 818 I did a proper reflow (not a reball for now) and still missing fw info on dsp1 and dsp2. So I think this is also another one with corrupted nand. Regarding the RT809H programmer, I did a quick google. This might be interesting too. I was going to order the flash cat, in the US the price is really good on the unit itself. But I also need the adapters, and shipping + customs is never cheap when I order from the US. You mentioned that the RT809H is more expensive. But I see good prices with lot's of adapters included and from china shipping and customs fee is normally quite o.k. here in the Netherlands. But for now I'm still a dummy on that subject and I feel a bit like a kid in a candy store What do you guys think, between those two programmers, do they share the most common features? br Maurice

Maurice, I already know this story of buying damaged units for a long time, it's an addiction, hehe. Today I do it with less intensity. The file I had from 818 was lost along with that of 717, I have to wait for another unit of this to enter to read NAND again, I even placed a request here for Todd to see if it has the 717 file that I need to recover a drive, maybe it has the 818 file too. As for the RT809, I purchased it a long time ago with a friend and priced well below a new one, it really has a lot of adapters, and despite several functions for video monitor repairs, I only use it for NANDs and NORs and sometimes for EEPROM, in general it serves me well. I also have another Phyton programmer (https://phyton.com/) who serves me for programming via ISP. I don't know FlashCat, Todd can talk more about it. I'm new here on the forum and I would like to know if you have any standard procedure for posting large files around 30Mb, tell me the masters.

They are typically the reason why the channel fails.
With respect to DSP1 and DSP2 being out, the NR818 has 2 DSP's but they work as one. Essentially the DSP1 offloads work to DSP2 so if DSP1 is out, DSP2 won't boot. Once you get DSP1 working DSP2 should comeback on line.

Thanks again Todd,
I will double check the elco's in the amp section. But there are not many there for L+R+C on the main board. Or do you mean the one's on the pre-amp board? The whole amp section looks a bit cheap if you compare it to the older amps. And what happened to the bias adjustment. Need to have a good look at the schematics again. Today I want to order the programmer as well. Still haven't made up my mind about RT809H or the flashcat pro. And in the US, what is for you guys a good source for nand chips? Here in europe i'm not sure. might order them from China. But I'm a bit concerned that I will receive batches with a lot of bad blocks in them

Sorry guys, I did not check in here in the last few days. I will look into the 717.
