If I have time I'm going to try both HDMI boards in the 2nd receiver tonight. Hopefully I can catch up to you and be 2/2.
Thanks for the offer, I may take you up on it if my reflow failed.

AVR 1 Fixed, although I only checked the Front Right Channel as that was the blown channel. Next step will be to switch in the known working HDMI board and power up AVR 2. Hopefully it will be working, and I can then swap back in HDMI board 2 and see if I fixed it with the reflow. Would be nice if I could find a daughterboard on Ebay, but a reflow will have to do. Good job. Keep us updated.

Ugh, just as I was about to put the 2nd HDMI board back into AVR2, I saw a tiny surface mount capacitor had popped loose (probably during my ill-fated heatgunning). Took a while to get it back into place, but after hard-wiring the connector I melted and plugging everything back in, I HAVE SOUND!!!
I won't be able to put them through their paces until this weekend, but I'm considering both of these projects complete. Now to find some compatible remotes on Ebay.
Thank you for the assistance, Mac.

I think I might have some spare time tomorrow to hook both receivers up and make sure everything is working as it should.
Planning on: AM/FM Tuner HDMI via Bluray iPod via stereo cable Xbox 360 via component/composite/optical
Any thing I'm missing?

Seems about right. Just don't do any hot plugging of the HDMI's.

I have an iPad to fix tomorrow and then I'm busy Thursday/Friday. Assuming no issues pop up with these two receivers, I'll start a new thread for the Pioneers or the Denon's this weekend.

The front right channel sounds a bit off ONLY when using the tuner. HDMI sound via bluray, AUX via iPod and SPDIF via Xbox 360 sound just fine.
2nd receiver sounds and looks good to go.

That's good. I never judge a unit by the tuner.

I have one remote and one mic coming, but otherwise I'd consider these fixed.
Thank you very much.

Good stuff! Thanks guys! I just snagged an NR708 for $41.13 and pretty sure based on the description I'll find the problem at the HDMI board 100uF caps but I'm secretly hoping there's more wrong with it! *evil laugh* Like the OP I have to get a remote and Odysse (sp?) mic too. A quick fleabay search shows the mics are the most expensive of the two at around $35. I'm estimating final costs to be well under $150 to finally replace my old reliable (and beloved) SR502. Not sure this is the right place to ask this but the mic....will any Onkyo Odysse mic work?

It is most likely the DTS chip needing to be re-balled. You'll need a hot air station to do it correctly. but it can be done in an oven too. If the speakers do not show up on the screen then that is most likely the issue. nashou

I hooked it up in my theater and watched some TV this weekend. I have a Harmony remote that was setup to use my old Onkyo. When we were done, without thinking, I used the remote to switch everything off. It wasn't until I heard the click of the relays that I realized that the same remote codes were working for the new receiver.
Tried just about everything from the old Onkyo remote, and I think I'll be fine using it for most things. I ordered the Audyssey mic through Onkyo, I'll post the model # when it arrives.

There is someone on eBay who offers to repair the HDMI board for $75. They include the daughterboard that was present on one of my two units as part of the repair.
