So I ended up reflashing my NR646 following this forum and especially the hints by tjmotter. It gave a new life to my Onkyo receiver. The problem was the same as mentioned by dpryan. My receiver had stopped producing any audio and the updates were failing exactly at 70% or 90%. Here are some hints for other people who have the same issue: 1. The flash chip to be programmed is on the lower side of the pcb. You will not find it if you just open the case and look on the top side. I used a borescope (that I had around) before disconnecting all the cables, just to be sure that the chip is there on the lower side. 2. I used the flashcat usb programmer with SOIC-8 clip as mentioned above, and it worked great. I did not have to unsolder the chip. It worked directly on the pcb (see image) 3. You may have to fiddle a bit with the in-circuit programming clip but it worked finally after couple of tries. Do not do this while to programmer is connected to the usb port. Disconnect, put the clip on, and then connect usb and see if you can detect the chip. 4. I used the memory image from elektroda (it's a polish site). If you can't find it, ping me and I can share the binary with you. It's 8mb. 5. I am using 107 firmware. I know it's old but I really don't have the desire to reprogram again if anything goes afoul while upgrading it. 6. Let me know if you need anything. Thank you everyone for all of your help. It wouldn't have been possible without it.
