Hello everyone. I picked up an Onkyo TX NR555 from a thrift shop for $5. They were unable to plug it in at the store to test but at $5, I thought it was a good deal. Anyways when I got home and plugged it in nothing happened. I opened it up and checked all the fuses and they are good. Here are the voltages I'm receiving on the power supply board:
5 - ~SWPON 0.0v 4 - +12VST 11.56v 3 - GNDDG 0.0v 2 - NC 0.0v 1 - MPON 11.56v
Im able to get the relay to click once I jump pins 1 to 3. After the relay clicks these are the voltages:
5 - ~SWPON 0.0v
4 - +12VST 17.34v
3 - GNDDG 0.0v
2 - NC 0.0v
1 - MPON 0.0v
Even after the relay clicks, I'm still unable to power on the unit.
Please help. Thank you.

I do not seem to have that model service manual. Do you have it?

I had two Onkyo receivers in the past, where the ribbon cable(white wide one, coming from the front display board) wasn't plugged in all the way and on another one, it was cut to narrow and when it was plugged in, the pins weren't aligned properly, they were shifted. I had to re-plug it correctly and it booted up.

I checked all ribbon cables. Disconnected and reseated them. Still no power.

Can you post a picture of the insides of your receiver?

I'm having the same problem and do have a copy of the service manual. PM me your email address and I'll send you a copy.

I have an NR646 that had the same symptoms. It was a shorted HDMI board. I have since found an replaced the shorted ic and the unit turns on and appears to function normally with the exception of no sound and no video on the hdmi ports so I still have some work to do.

Ok, I have the manual. Thanks u2nmg93. So who wants to do the trouble shooting?

I'm up for it, just let me know where to to start. I have another TX-NR555 with no sound and have have isolated it to the hdmi board. Both have no power or no sound when I switch the HDMI control boards. mmartell which IC did you find shorted or did you replace the entire board? The 646 seems to be similar in design to the 555.

Ok. Pick one and give me the exact symptoms.

I repaced Q7013 on the CEC data line. Have not looked at it since.

Ok. Pick one and give me the exact symptoms. Let's start with "no power" first since that will seem to lead to the no sound/video symptoms. When I plug it in I have 11.47 V on both pins labeled "12v" where the power board connects to the hdmi board. No "hybrid standby" light and no clicks when I press the power button on the receiver or remote. The receiver powers up when I change to the "no sound" hdmi board but then has no sound output on any channel or from any input. The Q7013 looks rather challenging to replace and I would like to see if there's any other troubleshooting/testing we can do that points to that before I try and replace it.

Well there are a couple different ways we can start here so lets start with the simplest first. So we know the problem is on the HDMI board but I want you to do something on the P/S board first. On the 5 pin connector on the PS board take a jumper wire and jump pins 1 and 3 (MPON and gnd). Now when you plug in the receiver you should hear the main relay on that board engage. See if the display does anything now.
