It's taken me a long time, but I'm finally getting back into repairing this AVR. I was able to get a hold of a working HDMI board, or so I thought.
I replaced the two transistors for the SR channel and swapped in the new board and it fired right up. The HDMI worked on the two outputs I checked (Cbl/Sat & DVD).
The problem is I'm only getting sound out of the Front Left and Right, nothing out of the center or Rear channels. I tested it with a blu-ray player and a couple of movies. There are only a few surround options, but Direct and Multi Ch Stereo only give sound out of the fronts.

Are the rear & center channels enabled (turned on) in the speaker setup portion of the menu? If they aren't, it doesn't matter what mode the AVR is in, it will only play through the enabled speakers.

I think I went through all the settings to check for that, but I'll confirm again. It's pretty bare bones, not many options at all.

When I went into the Audio settings I noticed that I couldn't choose "Surround Parameters", "Tone" or "Dialogue Level" as they were greyed out. This time I went through the "Initial Setup" and told the unit that I had a center and surround speakers hooked up. Finally sound is coming through on each channel. This one is fixed.

You'd be surprised how many customers I've sold AVRs to would email me after they received the AVR asking the same question "Why don't the surround speakers work?" and it was simply because they weren't enabled. I now have been just default setting any AVR I sell to all speakers enabled so that way they don't panic, I don't get those emails anymore as a result

I will want to revisit the two bad HDMI boards, but at a later date. I went a little crazy buying up broken Denon and Pioneer AVR's, so I'm going to focus on those first before heading back to the HDMI issue. Got a feeling it's the IC721 and I don't have the soldering capabilities to replace it.
